Is lacura face wash good

Deborah C. Escalante

I’m always on the hunt for new budget beauty products, so when I saw that my local Aldi added new products from Lacura Face Care, I had to give them a try.

Lacura Face Care Cleansing Exfloiating Scrub

Lacura Face Care Cleansing Exfoliating Scrub

I really wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked this up at Aldi, besides a generic face scrub. The tube says it’s ‘cool and refreshing’– and it turns out they mean it. This scrub contains menthol, so the cooling sensation is very intense. I love to use this after a hard workout to help cool down and remove sweat.

I am obsessed with this scrub and have been using it almost daily since I picked it up. It contains jojoba pearls, so I feel it’s gentle enough for you to use on a daily basis and shouldn’t be too abrasive for sensitive skin. In fact, the recommended use is morning AND night.

While I do love the scrub, there is a strong scent. To me, I pick up a sweet toothpaste smell (weird, I know) from the scrub, likely because of the menthol. If you’re sensitive to smells, this could potentially be a little too strong.

Would I buy it again? Yes!

Lacura Face Care Foaming Gel Cleanser

I am a daily user of the Lacura Face Care Hydrating Facial Cleanser, so I was excited to see another cleansing option available at my Aldi.

Lacura Face Care Facial Cleanser

This foaming cleanser differs from the hydrating cleanser, as it has a foaming quality (obviously) and says it’s also good for removing make-up. I’m not entirely convinced there’s a huge difference between these two as both leave my skin feeling soft and clean. I do feel like if you’re someone that wears a lot of make-up, the foaming wash may be the better pick.

The foaming cleanser has a light scent, but it is stronger than the hydrating cleanser. So again, if you’re sensitive to smells the hydrating cleanser is likely your better choice.

Would I buy it again? Maybe. I like the foaming cleanser, but I also like the hydrating cleanser. It’s a bit of a toss up for me. I’ll definitely be buying one or the other though.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Updated with additional information after several members of our household used these face washes for a prolonged time.

Aldi has a small selection of Regular Buy personal care products sold under its Lacura brand. They include sunscreen, razors and day and night cream. Aldi has carried a Lacura facial cleanser for years, but during a recent shopping trip, I noticed Aldi appeared to have updated its facial cleanser options.

In addition to the old familiar Lacura Hydrating Facial Cleanser (which some readers are reporting they can no longer find on the shelves), Aldi is selling two new face care products: Lacura Cleansing Exfoliating Scrub and Lacura Foaming Gel Cleanser. Like the original facial cleanser, these are Regular Buys that are in the store all year.

Lacura Facial cleanser and scrub

Several members of my family used both of these new products for a while to see how we liked them. I thought they were decent, but one family member who has more sensitive skin found both of these formulas to be overly drying. As a result, after I used up both containers myself, I’ve moved to purchasing different brands at a regular grocery store that don’t have a drying effect on skin. If Aldi went back to selling its old face wash formula, I’d happily switch back to buying facial cleanser at Aldi.

With that said, here’s a closer look at both new options:

Lacura Cleansing Exfoliating Scrub

This scrub is $2.79 for a 7-oz. stand-up tube dispenser (about 40 cents per ounce). It says it compares to Johnson & Johnson’s Clean & Clear Deep Action Exfoliating Scrub, which at the time of publication cost $4.97 for a 5-oz. container or $9.64 for a 2-pack from Walmart (about 99 cents per ounce and 96 cents per ounce, respectively). Aldi’s older Lacura Hydrating Facial Cleanser rings up at $3.19 for an 8.45-ounce bottle (about 38 cents per ounce), making it a slightly better deal than the new Lacura Cleansing Exfoliating Scrub.

The Aldi scrub claims to be oil free, soap free, paraben free, and good for all skin types. It was made in Germany and is dermatologically tested and was not tested on animals. It contains allantoin and white lily extract, with exfoliating particles made from mild jojoba pearls.

It can be used in the morning and evening. To use it, wet your face and gently massage the scrub onto the face using small circular motions, then rinse. Avoid direct contact with eyes, and if eye contact occurs rinse thoroughly with water. The container recommends following up with Lacura Q10 Day Cream or Night Cream.

This has a nice, not-overpowering scent, and it has a cooling effect on the skin. The small exfoliating particles give your skin a good scrub, which makes this cleanser different from what Aldi has offered in the past.

Lacura Foaming Gel Cleanser

This is $2.79 for an 8.45-oz. bottle with a pump dispenser (about 33 cents per ounce). It says it compares to Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser, which at the time of publication cost $9.07 for 6.7 ounces at Walmart (about $1.35 per ounce). Aldi’s original Lacura Hydrating Facial Cleanser rings up at $3.19 for an 8.45-ounce bottle (about 38 cents per ounce), making this new Lacura Foaming Gel Cleanser a slightly better deal.

The Aldi cleanser claims to be both a makeup remover and cleanser in one that is good for all skin types. Like the scrub mentioned above, this is dermatologically tested and was not tested on animals. It was manufactured in Luxembourg, and it is free of soap, oil, alcohol, and parabens. It also is noncomedogenic and hypoallergenic.

To use it, wet your hands and face with warm water, pump the cleanser into your hands, and work it into a lather. Gently massage onto the face using small circular motions, then rinse well and pat dry. Avoid direct contact with eyes, and if eye contact occurs rinse thoroughly with water. The container recommends following up with Lacura Q10 Day Cream or Night Cream.

This has a very mild scent. It’s a clear gel, and it forms light suds when rubbed into the skin, which makes it different from Aldi’s other long-time facial cleanser that is a white cream that does not foam.

The Verdict:

Aldi’s new Lacura facial scrub and facial cleanser both cost significantly less than their name-brand Clean & Clear and Neutrogena counterparts. Both have mild scents, and you can choose whether you want an exfoliating product or a basic cleanser. Be aware that if your skin is on the sensitive side, these cleansers may have a drying effect.

I have super sensitive skin and rarely try anything new for fear of a bad reaction. I wear the make-up brand Natorigin, which is both hypoallergenic and uses natural ingredients, and was using their expensive cleanser to clean my face for quite some time. I seem to have more breakouts as I get older (life is so cruel!) so I decided it was time for a change.

I was doing the weekly shop at Aldi when I came to the beauty section and decided to see what they had. The majority of the ingredients in this Lacura Face Wash are identical to the branded Simple version – but the price tag is largely different! At just 85p, I thought that this product was definitely worth a try. So how did I get on?

The first few days

For a couple of days my skin was quite dry. I think this was down to a few factors. Firstly, I was following the face wash instructions and washing my face morning and night – usually I would just use the shower as my morning face wash or splash my face at the sink, so I think my skin was confused as to why it was so clean! 😂

Secondly, in the evenings I was removing my foundation first and then washing my face. I now just wash my face once with the face wash, using it to remove my make-up (avoiding my eyes of course!) so that I am not over scrubbing my  face.

And finally, I think my skin was just adjusting to a new product – which is why I have been putting this review off for a while, as I wanted a few weeks of results before I made up my mind.

So, what’s the verdict?

This face wash is definitely a keeper! My skin feels fresh and clean, and I have been both unwell and had my time of the month without any breakouts! I think properly washing my face twice a day has been really good for my skin. I recently watched a video which explained why you should wash your face properly each morning, and it’s something I had never considered before.

The dermatologist in the video explained that our pillows not only harbour sweat and bacteria, but also sticky hairspray and hair products – which can block your pores overnight. So, washing your face in the morning (even though it appears clean) is just as important as washing your make-up off in the evening.

So, I do admit that my skin could have improved due to me taking better care of it. But, I need to use something to wash my face, and at just 85p a pop this is a great product for the job. I’m most amazed that I haven’t had any negative reactions to it. I think that being perfume and soap free, it is a really good option for anyone with sensitive skin. And, I will definitely be stocking up at Aldi next time I do the weekly shop! 😍
