UMBC Psychology Major Requirements

The UMBC Psychology major is designed to provide students with an understanding of the fundamental concepts and theories of psychology. Students will gain an understanding of the biological, cognitive, developmental, personality, and social aspects of psychology. The following are the requirements needed to major in Psychology at UMBC:


  • PSYC 100: Introduction to Psychology
  • PSYC 200: Research Methods in Psychology
  • PSYC 300: Statistical Methods in Psychology
  • PSYC 303: Cognition
  • PSYC 304: Learning and Motivation
  • PSYC 305: Sensation and Perception
  • PSYC 306: Developmental Psychology
  • PSYC 307: Personality Psychology
  • PSYC 308: Social Psychology
  • PSYC 310: Abnormal Psychology
  • PSYC Electives: Two additional PSYC courses at the 300-level or higher

GPA Requirements

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all PSYC courses
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 in all UMBC courses

Research Requirement

  • Completion of PSYC 200 (Research Methods in Psychology)
  • Completion of PSYC 400 (Research Seminar) or PSYC 496 (Honors Research)

Writing Requirement

  • Completion of PSYC 329 (Writing for Psychology and the Social Sciences)
