Mental health therapy indianola iowa

Deborah C. Escalante

If you are looking for help then you have some idea of how you would like things in your life to be different. It may be “I want to feel less depressed and more engaged with life.” It may be related to eating issues; whether anorexia, bulimia, overeating, or obsession with healthy food. Depression, anxiety and other emotions are so much a part of eating issues and all will prevent you from making the changes you cannot seem to without help. Depression and anxiety in general can keep you from having the life you so desire and life losses can also keep you stuck in the past. We all want to find joy and meaning in our present life.

What do I expect when I come to therapy?
How will it help me?

Sometimes support systems already in place aren’t enough to help us understand underlying reasons for relationship difficulties or emotions. Therapy can offer you tools to gain insight and learn healthy ways to cope and reach your goals. Your initial session will consist of gathering information about your current symptoms, stressors, history of your life and then we will use this information to develop a plan together to reach YOUR goals of therapy.

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a therapy which assists with flashbacks, triggers and extreme emotions related to previous traumas. The traumas may be acute and severe in nature, or ongoing personal traumas such as feeling disregarded by others including attachment figures. Visit emdria.org for more information.

What is Somatic Focused Therapy?

Somatic experiencing is trauma focused therapy used to heal stress disorders and traumas by increasing the feeling of safety necessary for a person to release stalled/blocked energy in the body, enabling them to heal the related emotions and cognitions.

What is Attachment based Therapy?

When a child does not receive a stable, nurturing environment during early years, symptoms may linger into adulthood causing difficulties in adult relationships. Difficulty to trust loved ones or fear of becoming attached often results. Attachment based therapy techniques are used to assist with these difficulties in relationships and related symptoms including depression and anxiety.

What is Ego State Therapy?

Ego states are often referred to the “inner child”. Although everyone has well developed, ego states to assist in daily functioning, for many people the “inner child” is less “permeable”, not easy to access fluently and may hold traumatic memories and emotions which are activated when certain situations arise that have an aspect similar to the memories stored in the separated neurological network. Ego state therapy is used to work with these dissociated neuro-networks and assist in developing less separated emotional states. This allows easier access to rational cognitions and self-soothing skills. Ego state therapy is beneficial for healing many symptoms in addition to dissociation such as: binge or restrictive eating, loss of temper, loss of memory, flashbacks, depression, fear of abandonment/loneliness, self injury, dissociative symptoms, and panic attacks.

With any problem, whether depression, grief or eating issues, your relationship with your therapist is the most important factor. Your feelings of safety and trust over time, the relational issues that surface during therapy, your hard work and the relational skill of your therapist is what will propel you toward change and the life you want.

If you feel hesitant to start therapy, feel free to call or email to get more information to assist you with your decision. We can talk or meet in person to decide together if the services offered here are a good fit for you!

Supporting Individuals.
Strengthening Communities.

Every day, individuals in 15 central Iowa counties turn to CICS for help improving their quality of life. We support adults struggling with brain health issues or intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

BRAIN HEALTH
Just as physical health needs are unique to each person, so are your mental health needs. Your brain is one of the most important parts of your body, and some people experience short- or long-term brain health challenges. We support adults struggling with brain health issues like depression, and individuals who need emotional support and don’t know where to turn.

INTELLECTUAL AND OTHER DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
All Iowans are valuable members of our communities, and we can connect individuals to the programs that enhance their lives. We support those reentering the workforce or trying to secure housing. We support caretakers of those with intellectual or developmental disabilities who lack the proper support system.

Whatever the situation, CICS has the resources to help. Explore the many ways we support individuals and strengthen the communities we serve by connecting you to service providers. How can we support you?
